dc.description.abstract | Thisstudyexaminesthepatternsinpayoutpoliciesworldwide.Utilizingdatafromasampleofmorethan 17,000companiesfrom33differentcountries,wefindevidenceinsupportofasignificantworldwide declineinthepropensitytopaydividends.Mostofthedeclineisduetothepayoutpoliciesofsmaller andlessprofitablefirmswithcomparativelymoreinvestmentopportunities.Wefindthat largerfirms, thosewithhigherprofitability, andfirmswithlowgrowthopportunitieshaveagreaterpropensityto paydividends.Theproportionofdividendpayersvariessubstantiallyacrossindustriesaswell.However, theproportionoffirmspayingdividendshasdeclinedovertime,evenafterfirms’ characteristicshave beencontrolledfor.Moreover, aggregatedividendsarehighlyconcentratedinthat theyarepaidonly byasmallgroupoffirms.Ourfindingsindicatethattherehasbeenasignificantdeclineintheaverage dividendpayoutratiosovertheyears.Thedeclineinthemeandividendpayoutratiosaswellastheproportionofpayersismuchmorepronouncedincivil lawcountries. | |
