Anadolu’da John Garstang’ın ayak izleri

Abstract

John Garstang was a British archaeologist who worked extensively in Turkey, Egypt and the Near East in the early twentieth century. He was an early advocate of using photography for precise archaeological recording. In Turkey, Garstang was accompanied on his Anatolia survey (1907) and Sakçagözü excavations (1908–11) by his German assistant, Horst Schliephack. Their photographs are an unparalleled record of the archaeological sites, landscapes and peoples in the period of the late Ottoman Empire. Garstang also used photography to demonstrate to his wealthy sponsors in Liverpool how he spent their money. These photos are therefore not just an archaeological record, but a unique insight into the meeting of two empires. The result of over five years of research by the University of Liverpool, this book presents a series of short articles about Garstang’s work in Turkey and the Near East, and a catalogue of newly digitised glass plate negatives from his 1907 journey across Anatolia. Many of the beautiful images presented here are seen for the first time in over 100 years...
