Ocular toxocariasis

Abstract

Ocular toxocariasis is an uncommon worldwide parasitic infection that affects mostly children. Parasitic infections of the eye are a major cause of blindness especially in areas with low social economic status and humid environments. The diagnosis of ocular toxocariasis is based on clinical findings, and associated laboratory data such as serum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) titers and ELISA Toxocara titers; other diagnostic and imaging methods are utilized such as optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, computed tomography, and ocular ultrasound. Treatment may be necessary for ocular complications arising from intraocular inflammation and vitreous membrane traction.
