Deviation from Negative Time Perspective (dNTP) refers to individuals’ capacity to refrain from thinking about several time frames (such as past and present) with a negative, biased perspective. dNTP, therefore, captures and is calculated based on individuals’ distance from negative time perspectives. Although robust evidence exists regarding the association between dNTP and numerous mental health outcomes, the underlying mechanism through which such an association might occur has received little empirical attention. Similarly, despite its role as a coping mechanism, the mediating role of humor styles (both adaptive and maladaptive) in the Turkish sample has yet to be thoroughly investigated. The current study, therefore, aimed to investigate the mediating role of humor styles on the association of dNTP with psychological distress. 563 (483 women) individuals filled out (M = 29.01, SD = 9.21) the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Humor Style Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Patient Health Questionnaire. Mediation analysis (AMOS version 26) indicated the significant mediator roles of adaptive and maladaptive humor styles between dNTP and depression. However, only adaptive humor styles significantly mediated the relationship between dNTP and anxiety. The indirect effect of maladaptive humor style was not significant for the relationship between dNTP and anxiety. Given its cross-sectional nature, further experimental and longitudinal research is required on the association of dNTP with psychological distress to help clinicians shape their temporal orientation-based therapies.
