Self-esteem, assertiveness and altruism Levels of SHMYO students and investigation of relationship between them

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the students' levels of self-esteem, assertiveness and altruism (helpfulness) at Health Services Vocational School and to examine the relationship between these variables. The research sample consists of students (n=288) studying in 2013-2014 academic year at SHMYO, Kilis 7 Aralık University. Data were collected through questionnaires. The questionnaire consists of questions of socio-demographic characteristics, Coopersmith Self-Esteem Scale, Rathus Assertiveness Inventory and Altruism Scale.The data were evaluated using numerical, percentage distributions, mean and correlation analysis. According to the survey, the total score of the self-esteem of the students were determined 61.11 ± 11.60, assertiveness total score of 19.18 ± 24.63 and altruism total score of 63.92 ± 9.8. A positive significant relationship were determined between the levels of self¬esteem, assertiveness and altruism of students. The level of self-esteem, assertiveness and altruism of students weren't determined statistically significant difference according to the section. However, the level of the social and helpfulness dimensions of altruism of students were determined statistically significant difference according to the section (p<0,05). Efforts of training, course content and course operation models will make important contributions for increase to the level of self-esteem, assertiveness and altruism of SHMYO students.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Sağlık H zmetler Meslek Yüksekokulundak (HSVS) öğrenc ler n benl k saygısı, atılganlık ve özgec l k (yardımseverl k) sev yeler n bel rlemek ve bu değ şkenler arasındak l şk y araştırmaktır. Araştırmanın örneklem 2013-2014 öğret m yılında K l s 7 Aralık Ün vers tes SHMYO'da öğren m gören öğrenc lerden (n=288) oluşmaktadır. Ver ler anket yoluyla toplanmıştır. Anket formu, sosyo-demograf k özell klere Coopersm th Benl k Saygısı Ölçeğ , Rathus Atılganlık Envanter ve Özgec l k Ölçeğ sorularından oluşmuştur. Ver ler, sayısal ve yüzde dağılımlar, ortalamalar ve korelasyon anal z kullanılarak değerlend r lm şt r. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre, öğrenc ler n n benl k saygısı toplam puanı 61,11±11,60, atılganlık toplam puanı 19,18±24,63, özgec l k toplam puanı 63.92±9.81 olarak saptanmıştır. Öğrenc ler n özgec l k, benl k saygısı ve atılganlık düzeyler arasında poz t f yönlü anlamlı l şk saptanmıştır. Öğrenc ler n okudukları bölümlere göre benl k saygısı, atılganlık ve özgec l k düzeyler nde stat st ksel olarak anlamlı b r farklılık saptanmamıştır. Bununla b rl kte, öğrenc ler n okudukları bölümler le özgec l ğ n sosyal ve yardımseverl k boyutlarında anlamlı b r farklılık saptanmıştır (p<0,05). Benl k saygısı, atılganlık ve özgec l k düzey n artırmaya yönel k eğ t mler, dersler çer kler ve ders şley ş modeller , SHMYO öğrenc ler ne öneml katkılar sağlayacaktır.
