Platon'un orta dönem diyaloglarında filozofların eğitimi ve şans

Abstract

There is an orthodoxy in Plato scholarship that assumes the Republic recognises only one way to become a philosopher, which is outlined in curricular education that will be legislated in the Kallipolis. This thesis challenges this view, arguing that the Republic itself contains at least two alternative educational models: an "autodidactic" path and a "Socratic" path. What we find, on examination, is that Plato expresses pessimism about the viability of any of these paths, especially within an unjust city, such as democratic Athens. Making philosophers, it turns out, is not an easy undertaking. I argue that Plato's management of this educational pessimism is found not in the Republic alone, but across a number of middle-period dialogues that deal with education. By examining the Symposium and the Phaedrus, I identify an "erotic path" to philosophy, which I interpret as a revised and more practicable version of the Socratic education that is familiar from the early period dialogues. This erotic path to philosophy is suited to the imperfect conditions of Athens. The novel interpretation I offer is that these multiple paths are not competing with each other, but make sense as responses to different levels of dependency on circumstantial luck. Whereas the erotic path works by strategically utilizing the contingencies of an unjust city, the curriculum of the Kallipolis is designed to eliminate circumstantial luck entirely, thereby guaranteeing the production of philosophers. This framework resolves the Republic's educational puzzle and provides a coherent account of Plato's educational project across his middle dialogues, demonstrating how the path to philosophy is adapted to the political realities of different cities.
