The use of nursing theories and models: a qualitative study

Abstract

Purpose: nursing theories and models contribute to researches that are specific to particular disciplines, and also to professionalization, by guiding education and care practices. It is therefore important to draw upon the opinions of members of profession on the use of such theories and models. The present study evaluates the opinions of nurses regarding the use of nursing theories and models. Materials and methods: this qualitative study involved a total of 36 nurses hemsire (Master's degrees students n:12, doctoral students n:12, nurse n:12). The study data was collected through focus group interviews using a Semi-Structured Interview Form, and an audio recording of the interviews was also made. The data obtained from the interviews was analyzed thematically. Results: there were three main themes designated in this research: the pros and cons of working with nursing theories and models; factors hindering working with theories/ models; and suggestions for increasing the use of such models. These main themes were structured so as to encompass the application, research, management and education fields. Conclusion: the respondents suggested that the number of nurses with competencies in nursing theories/models must be increased; that appropriate theories and models must be developed on the basis of care requirements; that these subjects must be included in the undergraduate program; and that culture-specific theories and models must be developed that can be reflected on care. / Amaç: hemşirelik teori ve modelleri, disipline özgü araştırmalara, eğitime ve bakım uygulamalarına yön vererek profesyonelleşmeye katkıda bulunmaktadır. Dolayısıyla meslek mensuplarının teori ve model kullanımı hakkındaki düşüncelerinin belirlenmesi oldukça önemlidir. Bu araştırma, hemşirelerin hemşirelik teori ve modellerine yönelik düşüncelerini belirlemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Gereç ve yöntem: nitel bir çalışma olarak yapılan araştırma, toplam 36 hemşire (yüksek lisans öğrencisi n:12, doktora öğrencisi n:12, hemşire n:12) ile yapılmıştır. Araştırma verileri, Yarı Yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu acılığıyla odak grup görüşmesi ile elde edilmiştir. Görüşmeler ses kayıt cihazına kaydedilmiştir. Görüşmeden elde edilen veriler tematik olarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: bu araştırmada üç ana tema belirlenmiştir. Bunlar; hemşirelik teori ve modelleri ile çalışmanın olumlu ve olumsuz yönleri, teori/model ile çalışmaya engel oluşturan faktörler ve model kullanımını artırmaya yönelik önerilerdir. Bu ana temalar uygulama, araştırma, yönetim ve eğitim alanlarını kapsayacak şekilde yapılandırılmıştır. Sonuç: hemşireler, hemşirelik teori/modelleri konusunda yetkinliğe sahip hemşire sayısının arttırılmasını, bakım gereksinimleri temel alınarak uygun teori ve modellerin geliştirilmesini, lisans programında bu konulara yer verilmesini, kültüre özgü ve bakıma yansıyacak teori ve modellerin geliştirilmesini önermişlerdir.
