One of the fundamental tools for the sustainable development of modern society is heterogeneous catalysis, which accounts for the efficient industrial production of essential chemicals, energy, and materials required to meet the basic needs of a growing global population. The role of heterogeneous catalysis is significant not only in enhancing industrial efficiency but also in addressing global environmental challenges, since heterogeneous catalysts are effectively utilized in a variety of environmental remediation processes. Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the cornerstones of green chemistry, since it enables the transformation of raw materials into valuable products that are less harmful to environment. This chapter delivers an overview of heterogeneous catalysis, by examining its fundamental principles, surface phenomena and reaction kinetics. The chapter serves scientists who want to explore and advance heterogeneous catalytic processes that support sustainable chemical transformations within the context of green chemistry. This chapter will also form basis for other chapters in the catalysis section of the Encyclopedia, providing basic information about heterogeneous catalysis.
