Self-reflection in post-colonial archaeology: A case study over Türkiye

Abstract

There are many different faces of colonization, and it can be suggested that in the case of Turkish archaeology, this face appears as self-colonization. Beginning with the last centuries of the Ottoman Empire and continuing through the Republican period until today, archaeology has been developed as a tool of modernization in Türkiye. The aim of this thesis is to explore the historical development of Turkish archaeology and its self-colonizing aspects, how it was reflected on the publications by the Turkish government, and the public archaeological projects that were conducted in the country.

Kolonileşmenin pek çok farklı yüzü vardır ve Türkiye arkeolojisi söz konusu olduğunda bu yüzün kendi kendini kolonileştirme olarak ortaya çıktığı söylenebilir. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun son yüzyıllarından başlayarak günümüze kadar arkeoloji, Türkiye'de modernleşmenin bir aracı olarak geliştirilmiştir. Bu tezin amacı, Türk arkeolojisinin tarihsel gelişimini ve kendi kendini sömürgeleştiren yönlerini, bunun Türk hükümetinin yayınlarına nasıl yansıdığını ve ülkede yürütülen kamu arkeoloji projelerini incelemektir.
