| dc.description.abstract | The main purpose of the chapter is to demonstrate Marcuse’s theoretical strength in developing a unique utopian perspective that offers a historically and materially grounded Marxist utopianism. In detailing Marcuse’s arguments, the chapter shows that major utopian projections would have already come to realize if not for the domineering forces that prevent the rational organization of resources. As Marcuse argues, false needs and the one-dimensionality of affluent societies are the main bulwarks against the revolutionary transformations enabled by industrial and scientific developments. Amid such internalized and overbearing oppressions of capitalism, for Marcuse, emancipating needs accompanied by the struggles of the Great Refusal are also burgeoning. Yet, to be realized within the contemporary world, they must be salvaged from most unexpected places, such as the realm of art. | |
