When Michael Bond asked me to write this chapter, I found myself asking the questions: What was the main identifying characteristic of my work? What made my orientation somewhat different from that of my colleagues? And when did I assume this orientation? More specifically, I thought of my recently published book Family and human development across cultures: A view from the other side (1996a), and wondered what had prompted me to write that book and what made that book different from other books in psychology with which I was familiar; indeed, what was ‘the view from the other side’?
