Abstract
The portion of the archaeological remains in Istanbul, well-known in the literature, consists of isolated, monumental building groups identified during large-scale surveys and unearthed by excavations until the 1970s. As a result of the increasing building activity in the city, specifically since the early 1960s, numerous small-scale remains, seemingly independent and anonymous, have emerged. Many of these remains documented by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums have not been published before.
In this book, Batu Bayülgen and Turgut Saner deal with all archaeological remains in the city within the walls through a comprehensive architectural description that brings together literature and museum material. Thus, the authors aim to make a solid contribution to the body of knowledge about the functioning of the city, greatly limited to written sources.
