The effect of nurse training on sleep qualityand anxiety level in patients with tracheal stent implantation

dc.description.abstractTracheal stents help improve airflow by expanding narrowed trachea or bronchi, and after the procedure, patient care and education are crucial for enhancing quality of life. Nurses play a vital role in patient education and care. This study aims to examine the impact of nurse-led stent care education on patients’ anxiety levels and sleep quality. This prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted between January 2, 2024, and July 2, 2024. Patients were divided into two groups. All patients completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Physicians provided standard education to all patients, while Group-1 received nurse-led education on the first and fifteenth days. On the 30th day, all patients were reassessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory and PSQI. Ninety patients (45 in each group) participated. Before the training, the mean anxiety score was higher in Group-1 (36.467) compared to Group-2 (34.889), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.433). By day 30, anxiety scores in Group-1 (17.667) were significantly lower than in Group-2 (30.667) (p < 0.001). Group-1 showed a significant reduction in anxiety (p < 0.001), whereas Group-2’s improvement was less pronounced (p = 0.004). Before training, no significant difference in PSQI scores was observed between the groups (p = 0.824). Post-training, Group-1 showed a greater improvement in PSQI scores (p < 0.001) compared to Group-2. In conclusion, nurse-led stent care education significantly improved anxiety and sleep quality, emphasizing the importance of nurse-supported patient education.
