Abstract: This thesis analyses inscriptions of women found within the sanctuaries of Artemis at Ephesos, Magnesia on the Maeander, and Sardis and were dated between the third century BCE to the third century CE. Women of this period were active agents in navigating the change from the Hellenistic to the Roman Imperial period and in shaping the civic identity of their cities. Inscriptions are analysed along with their archaeological, monumental, and their religious context. Processional routes from the sanctuary and to or around the city were used to form connections between inscriptions. This analysis shows that women, especially the elite women that forms the majority of the data, were active and visible agents in creating and maintaining a civic identity during this period; moreover, they celebrated and were proud of the accomplishments of their female relations.
