Flow-line scheduling problem with controllable processing times
(Taylor & Francis, 1997) Kouvelis, P.; Department of Business Administration; Karabatı, Selçuk; Faculty Member; Department of Business Administration; College of Administrative Sciences and Economics; 38819
In this paper we address the simultaneous scheduling and optimal-processing-times selection problem in a multi-product deterministic flow line operated under a cyclic scheduling approach. The selection of processing times plays an important role in achieving the desired production rate with the least possible operating cost. We first formulate the important subproblem of optimal-processing-times selection for different objectives, when the sequence of jobs is fixed, and then develop an efficient solution procedure for it. The fast solution of the fixed sequence problem is necessary for the development of efficient approximate solution procedures for the simultaneous scheduling and optimal-processing-times problem. A computational study on the effectiveness of the proposed solution procedure is presented. For the solution of the simultaneous scheduling and optimal-processing-times problem we suggest an iterative solution procedure, and report our computational experience with this procedure. For the solution of large problems we present a genetic algorithm. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated through computational results and by evaluating the performance of the obtained solutions against lower bounds that we developed for the problem.

Line spectral frequency representation of subbands for speech recognition
    (Elsevier, 1995) Erzin, Engin; N/A; N/A; N/A; N/A
In this paper, a new set of speech feature parameters is constructed from subband analysis based Line Spectral Frequencies (LSFs). The speech signal is divided into several subbands and the resulting subsignals are represented by LSFs. The performance of the new speech feature parameters, SUBLSFs, is compared with the widely used Mel Scale Cepstral Coefficients (MELCEPs). SUBLSFs are observed to be more robust than the MELCEPs in the presence of car noise. © 1995.

A faster simulation method for the stochastic response of hysteretic structures subject to earthquakes
(Elsevier, 1996) Çakmak, Ahmet Ş.; Nielsen, Søren R.K.; Department of Mathematics; Köylüoğlu, Hasan Uğur; Teaching Faculty; Department of Mathematics; College of Sciences; N/A
A semi-analytical forward-difference Monte Carlo simulation procedure is proposed for the determination of the lower order statistical moments and the joint probability density function of the stochastic response of hysteretic non-linear multi-degree-of-freedom structural systems subject to nonstationary gaussian white noise excitation, as an alternative to conventional direct simulation methods. The method generalizes the so-called Ermak-Allen algorithm developed for simulation applications in molecular dynamics to structural hysteretic systems. The proposed simulation procedure rely on an assumption of local gaussianity during each time step. This assumption is tantamount to various linearizations of the equations of motion. The procedure then applies an analytical convolution of the excitation process, hereby reducing the generation of stochastic processes and numerical integration to the generation of random vectors only. Such a treatment offers higher rates of convergence, faster speed and higher accuracy. The procedure has been compared to the direct Monte Carlo simulation procedure, which uses a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme with the white noise process approximated by a broad band Ruiz-Penzien broken line process. The considered system was a multi-dimenensional hysteretic shear frame, where the constitutive equation of the hysteretic shear forces are described by a bilinear hysteretic model. The comparisons show that significant savings in computer time and accuracy can be achieved.

Prediction of global and localized damage and future reliability for RC structures subject to earthquakes
(1997) Nielsen, SRK; Çakmak, AS; Kirkegaard, PH; Department of Mathematics; Köylüoğlu, Hasan Uğur; Teaching Faculty; Department of Mathematics; College of Sciences; N/A
This paper deals with the prediction of global and localized damage and the future reliability estimation of partly damaged reinforced concrete structures under seismic excitation. Initially, a global maximum softening damage indicator is considered based on the variation of the eigenfrequency of the first mode due to the stiffness and strength deterioration of the structure. The hysteretic behaviour of the first mode is modeled by a Clough and Johnston hysteretic oscillator(1) with degrading elastic restoring force. The linear parameters of the model are assumed to be known, measured before the arrival of the first earthquake by non-destructive vibration tests or by means of structural analysis. The previous excitation and displacement response time series are employed for the identification of the instantaneous softening using an ARMA model. The hysteresis parameters are updated after each earthquake. The proposed model is next generalized for a MDOF system. Using the calibrated model for the structure and the global damage state, the global damage in a future earthquake can then be estimated when a suitable earthquake simulation model is applied. The performance of the SDOF hysteretic model is illustrated on RC frames which were tested by Sozen and his associates.

Local and modal damage indicators for rc frames subject to earthquakes
(Asce-Amer Soc Civil Engineers, 1998) Nielsen, SRK; Abbott, J; Cahmak, AS; Department of Mathematics; Köylüoğlu, Hasan Uğur; Teaching Faculty; Department of Mathematics; College of Sciences; N/A
Local, modal, and overall damage indicators for reinforced concrete shear frames subject to seismic excitation are defined and studied. Each story of the shear frame is represented by a Clough and Johnston hysteretic oscillator with a degrading elastic fraction of the restoring force. The local maximum softening damage indicators are defined in a closed form based on the variation of the eigenfrequency of the local oscillators due to the local stiffness and strength deterioration. The modal maximum softening damage indicators are calculated from the variation of the eigenfrequencies of the structure during excitation. The linear and nonlinear parameters of the local oscillators are assumed to be known. Next, a statistical analysis is performed where a sample five-story shear frame is subject to sinusoidal and simulated earthquake excitations. The shear frame is subject to 30 independent simulations of the earthquake excitation, which is modeled as a stationary Gaussian stochastic process with the Kanai-Tajimi spectrum, multiplied by an envelope function. Equations of motion of the storys are solved by a Runge-Kutta fourth-order scheme, where the local softening value is recorded. The modal maximum softening indicators are calculated from the known instantaneous stiffness matrix, which is a function of the structural properties and local damage. Alternatively, a Fourier analysis is performed for consecutive time windows to measure the same evolution using the top story displacement. Finally, the relationship between local and modal damage indices are investigated statistically.

A comparison of stochastic and interval finite elements applied to shear frames with uncertain stiffness properties
(Elsevier, 1998) Elishakoff, I; Department of Mathematics; Köylüoğlu, Hasan Uğur; Teaching Faculty; Department of Mathematics; College of Sciences; N/A
Structural uncertainties are modelled using stochastic and interval methods to quantify the uncertainties in the response quantities. Through a suitable discretization, stochastic and interval finite element methods are constructed. A comparison of these methods is illustrated using a shear frame with uncertain stiffness properties.
