Publication Metadata only Trans-Atlantic equity volatility connectedness: U.S. and European financial institutions, 2004-2014(Oxford Univ Press, 2016) Diebold, Francis X.; Department of Economics; Yılmaz, Kamil; Faculty Member; Department of Economics; College of Administrative Sciences and Economics; 6111We characterize equity return volatility connectedness in the network of major American and European financial institutions, 2004-2014. Our methods enable precise characterization of the timing and evolution of key aspects of the financial crisis. First, we find that during 2007-2008 the direction of connectedness was clearly from the United States to Europe, but that connectedness became bidirectional starting in late 2008. Second, we find an unprecedented surge in directional connectedness from European to U.S. financial institutions in June 2011, consistent with massive deterioration in the health of EU financial institutions. The proposed measures are based on spatial differences of color and motion along the boundary of the estimated video object plane and temporal differences between the color histogram of the current object plane and its predecessors. They can be used to localize (spatially and/or temporally) regions where segmentation results are good or bad; and/or they can be combined to yield a single numerical measure to indicate the goodness of the boundary segmentation and tracking results over a sequence. The validity of the proposed performance measures without GT have been demonstrated by canonical correlation analysis with another set of measures with GT on a set of sequences (where GT information is available). As is well known, a sufficient condition for the existence of smooth (at least C-1-smooth) finite-dimensional inertial manifolds containing a global attractor is the so-called spectral gap condition for the corresponding linear operator. There are also a number of examples showing that if there is no gap in the spectrum, then a C-1-smooth inertial manifold may not exist. on the other hand, since an attractor usually has finite fractal dimension, by Mane's theorem it projects bijectively and Holder-homeomorphically into a finite-dimensional generic plane if its dimension is large enough. It is shown here that if there are no gaps in the spectrum, then there exist attractors that cannot be embedded in any Lipschitz or even log-Lipschitz finite-dimensional manifold. Thus, if there are no gaps in the spectrum, then in the general case the inverse Mane projection of the attractor cannot be expected to be Lipschitz or log-Lipschitz. Among these, surface haptic displays that modulate the friction between the human finger and touch surface are emerging as user interfaces. One such modulation can be achieved by applying an alternating voltage to the conducting layer of a capacitive touchscreen to control electroadhesion between its surface and the finger pad. However, the nature of the contact interactions between the fingertip and the touchscreen under electroadhesion and the effects of confined material properties, such as layering and inelastic deformation of the stratum corneum, on the friction force are not completely understood yet. Here, we use a mean field theory based on multiscale contact mechanics to investigate the effect of electroadhesion on sliding friction and the dependency of the finger-touchscreen interaction on the applied voltage and other physical parameters. We present experimental results on how the friction between a finger and a touchscreen depends on the electrostatic attraction between them. The proposed model is successfully validated against full-scale (but computationally demanding) contact mechanics simulations and the experimental data. Our study shows that electroadhesion causes an increase in the real contact area at the microscopic level, leading to an increase in the electrovibrating tangential frictional force. We find that it should be possible to further augment the friction force, and thus the human tactile sensing, by using a thinner insulating film on the touchscreen than used in current devices.Publication Metadata only A homozygous pathogenic missense variant broadens the phenotypic and mutational spectrum of CREB3L1-related osteogenesis imperfecta(Oxford Univ Press, 2019) Guillemyn, Brecht; Demuynck, Lynn; Sips, Patrick; De Paepe, Anne; Syx, Delfien; Coucke, Paul J.; Malfait, Fransiska; Symoens, Sofie; N/A; Kayserili, Hülya; Faculty Member; School of Medicine; 7945The cyclic adenosine monophosphate responsive element binding protein 3-like 1 (CREB3L1) gene codes for the endoplasmic reticulum stress transducer old astrocyte specifically induced substance (OASIS), which has an important role in osteoblast differentiation during bone development. Deficiency of OASIS is linked to a severe form of autosomal recessive osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), but only few patients have been reported. We identified the first homozygous pathogenic missense variant [p.(Ala304Val)] in a patient with lethal OI, which is located within the highly conserved basic leucine zipper domain, four amino acids upstream of the DNA binding domain. In vitro structural modeling and luciferase assays demonstrate that this missense variant affects a critical residue in this functional domain, thereby decreasing the type I collagen transcriptional binding ability. In addition, overexpression of the mutant OASIS protein leads to decreased transcription of the SEC23A and SEC24D genes, which code for components of the coat protein complex type II (COPII), and aberrant OASIS signaling also results in decreased protein levels of SEC24D. The relationship between quality of life in patients with cancer and treatment, early diagnosis, disease acceptance, pain, psychological distress, loss of organ, duration of disease, and caregivers was investigated. This study included 508 patients with cancer treated in either inpatient or outpatient clinics of 5 oncology centers in Ankara, Turkey, between August 1998 and January 2000. Patients were selected by interviews. Data were collected by a questionnaire to determine disease features and to evaluate patients' quality of life. We found that several disease features, including treatment, early diagnosis, disease acceptance, pain, psychological distress, and caregivers, had an effect on patients' quality of life (P < 0.05), whereas loss of organ and duration of disease did not. The results of this study underline the significant effect of psychosocial care programs on quality of life. We have carried out precise measurements of the concentrationdependent THz absorption coefficient of 15 solvated alkali halide salts around 85 cm-1 (2.5 THz). In addition, we recorded overview spectra between 30 and 300 cm-1 using a THz Fourier transform spectrometer for six alkali halides. For all solutions we found a linear increase of THz absorption compared to pure water (THz excess) with increasing solute concentration. These results suggest that the ions may be treated as simple defects in an H-bond network. They therefore cannot be characterized as either kosmotropes or chaotropes. Below 200 cm-1, the observed THz excess of all salts can be described by a linear superposition of the water absorption and an additional absorption that is attributed to a rattling motion of the ions within the water network. By providing a comprehensive set of data for different salt solutions, we find that the solutions can all be very well described by a model that includes damped harmonic oscillations of the anions and cations within the water network. We find this model predicts the main features of THz spectra for a variety of salt solutions. The assumption of the existence of these ion rattling motions on sub-picosecond time scales is supported by THz Fourier transform spectroscopy of six alkali halides. Above 200 cm-1 the excess is interpreted in terms of a change in the wing of the water network librational mode. Accompanying molecular dynamics simulations using the TIP3P water model support our conclusion and show that the fast sub-picosecond motions of the ions and their surroundings are almost decoupled. These findings provide a complete description of the solute-induced changes in the THz solvation dynamics for the investigated salts. This research examines consumers' reactions to cobranded partnerships that feature brands with either complementary or similar attribute levels, both of which are common in the marketplace. The results of six experiments show that consumers' evaluations vary as a function of concept combination interpretation strategy (property mapping or relational linking) and whether cobranded partners have complementary or similar attributes. Specifically, when consumers use property mapping, they evaluate cobranded partnerships with complementary (vs. similar) attribute levels more favorably. In contrast, when using relational linking, they evaluate cobranded partnerships with complementary (vs. similar) attribute levels less favorably. The results also reveal that the breadth of the host brand (broad vs. narrow) and the type of advertising influence the extent to which consumers are likely to use property mapping or relational linking in evaluating cobranded partnerships.
