    Prototyping products using web-based AI tools: designing a tangible programming environment with children

    A wide variety of children's products such as mobile apps, toys, and assistant systems now have integrated smart features. Designing such AI-powered products with children, the users, is essential. Using high-fidelity prototypes can be a means to reveal children's needs and behaviors with AI-powered systems. Yet, a prototype that can show unpredictable features similar to the final AI-powered product can be expensive. A more manageable and inexpensive solution is using web-based AI prototyping tools such as Teachable Machine. In this work, we developed a Teachable Machine-powered game-development environment to inform our tangible programming environment's design decisions. Using this kind of an AI-powered high-fidelity prototype in the research process allowed us to observe children in a very similar setting to our final AI-powered product and extract design considerations. This paper reports our experience of prototyping AI-powered solutions with children and shares our design considerations for children's self-made tangible representations.

    Transition to family practice in Turkey

    Introduction: Turkey's primary health care (PHC) system was established in the beginning of the 1960s and provides preventive and curative basic medical services to the population. This article describes the experience of the Turkish health system, as it tries to adapt to the European health system. It describes the current organization of primary health care and the family medicine model that is in the process of implementation and discusses implications of the transition for family physicians and the challenges faced in meeting the needs for health care staff. In Turkey a trend toward urbanization is evident and more staff positions in rural PHC centers are vacant. Shortages of physicians and an ineffective distribution of doctors are seen as a major problem. Family medicine gained popularity at the beginning of the 1990s, as a specialty with a 3-year postgraduate training program. Medical practitioners who are graduates of a 6-year medical training program and are already working in the PHC system are offered retraining courses. Better working conditions and higher salaries may be important incentives for medical practitioners to sign a contract with the social security institution of Turkey. Discussion: The lack of well-trained primary care staff is an ongoing challenge. Attempts to retrain medical practitioners to act as family physicians show promising results. Shortness of physician and health professionals and lack of time and resources in primary health care are problems to overcome during this process.

    The influence of gender in the adoption of engineering studies

    Gender equality is one of the major goals in the social development of XXI century. In this work we analyzed the role of gender in the adoption of college studies focused on scientific and technical fields, with emphasis on engineering studies. As is apparent, it is necessary to continue to promote such studies in order to achieve those objectives of equality. An ongoing survey is described to investigate the factors of gender segregation in this career. It is also proposed to transfer to the classroom measures that encourage the presence of women in electrical engineering.

    Industrial design students' perceptions towards a career in user experience field in Turkey

    The rapid growth of the user experience (UX) field has brought efforts to meet the increasing demand for specialists by welcoming professionals from diverse disciplines, including industrial design (ID). UX field offers ID graduates extended professional possibilities, potentially appeasing the challenging conditions of the ID job market in Turkey. Although there are some educational efforts on getting prepared for a career in UX, how ID students perceive such a career path has not been investigated. For this purpose, this paper presents a survey study conducted with senior ID students to understand their perspectives regarding the likelihood of a career in UX. The findings outline the extent and reasons of their interest in UX, benefits of their educational background, and perceived readiness and individual efforts towards building a UX career. We discuss the potentials of ID background for UX, and present implications for design education and practice to better prepare students for a career in UX.

    The role of university-industry liaisons in achieving comprehensive curricula in engineering

    The proposed methodology and multiple forms of feedback can serve as a consistent tool in order to achieve a comprehensive learning experience, which develops beyond University and aids with lifelong learning itineraries for industry and with enhanced research relations for academia. The development of Final Degree Projects as well Master's Thesis has proved to be a valuable tool for students, faculty and industrial members. For students, it is a good opportunity to gain insight into real world working environments and project demands. For academia, it provides information on how to update existing teaching curricula in engineering degrees, and opens the door to new joint ventures in Terms of research with industry. For industry members, it is a natural mechanism to have access to state of the art research and a good pool of future workers in their institutions. Overall, the experience is very well perceived by all actors and the feedback obtained up to this date will provide valuable information in preparing imminent Final Degree projects for the EHEA adapted four-year programs, as well as for the new Master Degrees under development.

    Knowing the abcs: teaching the principles of radiology to medical students in Turkey

    Background: Radiology education in Turkey is mainly taught during clinical years of medical school and often lacks main principles. Exposure to the fundamentals of radiology at an early stage of medical education may drastically help students generate a better understanding of radiology and expand their interest in the specialty. With the Principles of Radiology Course that we provided, pre- and post-session tests, and assessment survey at the end of the course, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of such an online course among Turkish medical students. Methods: A total of nine online sessions on imaging modalities principles was developed by radiology professors. Each session was given through Zoom by radiologists from different U.S.-institutions to Turkish medical students from state (n = 33) and private (n = 8) universities. Pretests and post-tests were given to participants via Qualtrics before and after each session, respectively. Paired two-sample t-tests were conducted to detect the variance and p=-.05 was used as the significance level. An evaluation survey was distributed at the end of the course to collect their feedback through SurveyMonkey. Results: A total of 1,438 predominantly Turkish (99.32%) medical students engaged with this course. An average of 506 students completed both pre-test and post-test. There was a statistically significant (p < .001) increase in the scores in post-test (mean[range]:7.58[5.21-8.53]) relative to pre-test (mean[range]:5.10[3.52-8.53]). Four hundred and thirty-nine participants (F/M:63.33%/35.54%) completed the end-of-course survey. A total of 71% and 69.70% of the participants strongly agreed that the course would be useful in their clinical practice and had increased their understanding of radiology. They also reported that their level of confidence in the subjects had increased 68% and reached a weighted average of 3.09/4. The survey revealed that 396 (90.21%) of the participants strongly or somewhat agree that introductory principles and concepts should be presented in earlier years of medical education. Compared to in-person education, 358 (81.55%) found the course extremely or very convenient. Conclusion: Online lecture series consisting of the principles of the radiological imaging modalities can be offered to Turkish medical students to enhance their grasp of the various imaging modalities and their correct clinical application.

    Psychometric testing of the Turkish version of the skin cancer and sun knowledge scale in nursing students

    The present study aimed assesses the nursing students' knowledge of skin cancer and sun and their sun protection behaviors. This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed from May to June 2014 with a convenience sample of 376 undergraduate nursing students from one nursing faculty located in Izmir. Mean age of the students was 21.56 +/- 1.96 years. The mean score that the females obtained from the level of knowledge and protection behaviors scales was significantly higher than that of the males. Older age group (>= 22 years) obtained higher scores on the knowledge and protection behaviors scales than younger group (<= 21 years). Nursing students' knowledge of, and behavior regarding, skin cancer and sun health were insufficient. Equipping them with the necessary knowledge and behaviors related to skin cancer and sun health by developing training programs and strategies on the issue is of utmost importance.
