While considerable research has been conducted with teenagers and young adults, scant attention has been paid to differences among adult age groups regarding privacy management behavior. With a multidimensional approach to privacy attitudes, we investigate Facebook use, privacy attitudes, online privacy literacy, disclosure, and privacy protective behavior on Facebook across three adult age groups (18-40, 41-65, and 65+). The sample consisted of an online convenience sample of 518 adult Facebook users. Comparisons suggested that although age groups were comparable in terms of general Internet use and online privacy literacy, younger groups were more likely to use SNSs more frequently, use Facebook for social interaction purposes, and have larger networks. Also, younger adults were more likely to self-disclose and engage in privacy protective behaviors on Facebook. In terms of privacy attitudes, older age groups were more likely to be concerned about privacy of other individuals. In general, all dimensions of privacy attitudes (i.e., belief that privacy is a right, being concerned about one's privacy, belief that one's privacy is contingent on others, being concerned about protecting privacy of others) were positively correlated with engagement in privacy protective behavior on Facebook. A mediation model demonstrated that amount of disclosure mediated the relationship between age groups and privacy protective behavior on Facebook. Finally, ANCOVA suggested that the impact of privacy attitudes on privacy protective behavior was stronger among mature adults. Using a between-subjects design, we tested whether an emphasis on the female versus the male scientist as the vaccine's inventor in a news story influenced attitudes about the BioNTech vaccine and vaccination intentions. Partly confirming role congruity theory, three-way interaction results from 665 participants demonstrated that among male participants with a stronger belief in traditional gender roles (compared to males with lower belief), the presence of the female inventor, either by herself or together with the male inventor, decreased the perceived efficacy and safety of the vaccine and reduced intentions to be vaccinated by the BioNTech vaccine. We did not observe such differences for women. These findings highlight how gender bias may influence individuals' information processing and decision making in a way that may have negative consequences for public health.Publication Open Access Co-learning for sustainable design: the case of a circular design collaborative project in Ireland(Elsevier, 2021) McMahon, Muireann; Department of Media and Visual Arts; Bakırlıoğlu, Yekta; Researcher; Department of Media and Visual Arts; College of Social Sciences and Humanities; 164439Incorporating concerns of sustainability and circularity into design practice is undoubtedly important for both design research and education. There is a need to equip novice designers with the skills to facilitate a sustainability-focused future, whilst also collaborating with industry to implement these concerns into contemporary design practices. On the one hand, SMMEs and small teams in other sectors (i.e. public) lack the resources and time to improve their knowledge, to explore alternative ways of conducting business and to transform their design practices. Contrarily, novice designers (i.e. design students) can access state-of-the-art knowledge on sustainability and experiment with sustainable design practices throughout their education, yet they lack insights into market realities around implementation. Similarly, design researchers and educators are on the fore-front of developing sustainability-focused design methodology through research, but they often lack exposure to the industry. If the parties were all to work together, however, the sharing of resources, knowledge and experiences become valuable commodities in creating more sustainable design practices. This paper outlines an on-campus Design for Circular Economy and Sustainability training programme where industry worked with interns and academics to address real-world challenges. The project forms a part of a larger EU collaboration. The programme aimed to create a co-learning environment for novice designers, industry partners and design researcher/educators. Here all stakeholders could exchange their knowledge and insights and learn from each other to explore and experiment with practically implementing sustainability in real-world contexts. This paper briefly introduces the development of the programme and explores how and what co-learning occurred for the different stakeholders. Finally, the paper discusses how the outcomes of this programme subsequently affected the practices of industry partners. The programme offered a unique environment to prepare novice designers for the real world and provided researcher/educators with valuable insights on how to facilitate such a transition. The industry partners utilised this experience and outcomes to review their practices and kick-start the transition towards sustainable businesses.Publication Metadata only Design for long-term tracking: insights from a six-month field study exploring users' experiences with activity trackers(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019) Department of Media and Visual Arts; Coşkun, Aykut; Faculty Member; Department of Media and Visual Arts; College of Social Sciences and Humanities; 165306This paper presents recommendations for designing activity trackers that can support long-term tracking behaviour. These recommendations are based on a six-month field study exploring activity trackers' impact on physical activity (PA) performance and the aspects leading to abandonment. Twenty-six individuals, who were assigned to the activity tracker condition (i.e. Fitbit One) or the control condition, took part in the study. Semi-structured interviews, Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and activity data derived from the tracker were used to understand participants' expectations, experiences, and insights about tracking PA. We analyze the content of news coverage of political parties across four consecutive national election campaigns in Turkey (2002, 2007, 2011, and 2015) to track changes in press-party parallelism. We explore three dimensions of press-party parallelism in order to study its dynamics: visibility of political parties, the effective number of parties represented in newspapers, and lastly, favorability toward political parties. First, within each campaign cycle, as election day approaches, visibility of the incumbent party increases while the visibility of other parties tends to decline. Likewise, the incumbent party's visibility increases across the four elections we study. Second, for all newspaper groups, the number of parties that receive favorable or unfavorable coverage declines over consecutive election terms. Third, the incumbent party is the only that gains in terms of positive coverage within and across each election campaign period. Usability analysis of the SIs that guides their development is hence important. In this study, we record the eye movements of doctors and other people with no medical expertise during interaction with an SI that directs a simulated cryoablation task. There are two different arrangements for the layout of the same SI, and the goal is to evaluate whether one of these arrangements is ergonomically better than the other. We use several gaze related statistics some of which are employed in an SI design context for the first time. Even though the performance and gaze related analysis reveals that the two arrangements are comparable in many respects, there are also differences. Specifically, one arrangement leads to more saccades along the vertical and horizontal directions, lower saccade amplitudes in the crucial phase of the task, more locally clustered and yet globally spread viewing. Accordingly, that arrangement is selected for future use. Exploring their perspective is needed to reflect their daily kitchen dynamics on the design process and discover possible new benefits situated in the home kitchen. on this basis, this study focuses on finding potential 3DFP users and explores their attitudes towards using 3DFP technology in their home kitchens through a two-stage study: First, we prioritized potential users based on their relationship with food through a questionnaire and found six factors that positively affect their attitude towards 3DFP: cooking every day, ordering food less than once a month, eating out at least a couple of times a month, having a mini oven, A multicooker, or a kettle, liking to try new foods, thinking that cooking is a fun activity. Second, we conducted semi-structured interviews with seven participants to discuss the possible benefits and drawbacks of 3DFP technology for their daily lives in the kitchen. Results revealed two new benefits that 3DFP at home may provide: risk-free cooking and cooking for self-improvement. We discuss the potential implications of these two benefits for design and HCI research focusing on how to facilitate automation and pleasurable aspects of cooking into future 3DFP devices.Publication Metadata only Folk theories of false information: a mixed-methods study in the context of Covid-19 in Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2022) Öz, Bahadır; Okçuoğlu, Gülten; Tapramaz, Fezal; Department of Media and Visual Arts; Çamurdan, Suncem Koçer; Faculty Member; Department of Media and Visual Arts; College of Social Sciences and Humanities; 51021This study explores how media users define false information in the daily flow of their lives against a backdrop of sociopolitical contexts. We focus on the vernacular definitions of false information through the concept of folk theories, which are the intuitive explanatory tools users develop to make sense of and act in the world around them. Based on mixed-method research conducted in Turkey during the Covid-19 pandemic, we identify three prevailing folk theories of false information. First, users consider text-based characteristics, such as the presence of evidence as a flag of accuracy/inaccuracy. Second, users assume that people in their social networks distinguish between the accurate and the inaccurate, and thus the information coming from these circles is accurate. Finally, users imagine that people whose worldviews conflict with theirs spread inaccurate information. Despite users' overarching references to textual traits of news, it appears that the latter two folk theories drive users' information processing practices in daily life.
