We report a narrow-linewidth, tunable, gain-switched Cr:ZnSe laser operating between 2255 and 2455 nm. The spectral width of the laser was reduced from 125 nm to 0.3 nm by using injection seeding. Seeding was achieved with a second tunable CW Cr:ZnSe laser. The output wavelength was varied by tuning the wavelength of the seed laser. The seeded oscillator produced as high as 157 mu J pulses with 598 mu J incident pump pulse energy at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The slope efficiency was determined to be 26%.

This paper provides an overview of the experimental work performed in our research group on the synthesis, spectroscopic investigation, and laser characterization of chromium-doped zinc selenide (Cr(2+):ZnSe). By using diffusion doping, 40 polycrystalline Cr(2+):ZnSe samples with ion concentration in the range of 0.8 x 10(18) to 66 x 10(18)ions/cm(3) were prepared. From the absorption data, temperature-dependent diffusion coefficient of chromium and losses at the lasing wavelength were measured. In luminescence measurements, the concentration dependence of the fluorescence lifetime and fluorescence quantum efficiency was determined. During continuous-wave operation, the optimum concentration for lasing was determined to be 8.5 x 10(18) ions/cm(3) at an incident pump power of 2.1 W for 1800-nm pumping. During gain switched operation, intra-cavity pumping with a 1570-nm optical parametric oscillator resulted in continuous tuning between 1880 and 3100 nm. By employing dispersion compensation with a MgF(2) prism pair, Kerrlens mode-locked operation was also demonstrated at 2420 nm, resulting in the generation of 95-fs pulses with an average output power of 40 mW and spectral bandwidth of 69 nm. The time-bandwidth product of the pulses was further measured to be 0.335 close to the expected value of 0.315 for sech(2) pulses.
Operation of femtosecond Kerr-lens mode-locked Cr:ZnSe lasers with different dispersion compensation methods

We employed various low-cost dispersion compensation methods to generate femtosecond pulses from a Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) Cr:ZnSe laser operating near 2400 nm. Prism pairs made of CaF2 and MgF2 and slabs of BK7 and YAG were tested. Pulses as short as 92 fs were obtained when a CaF2 prism pair was used in the resonator with a 1% output coupler. With a 6% output coupler and CaF2 prism pair, pulse energies as high as 1.8 nJ were obtained. The KLM operating point was further analyzed for different dispersion compensation scenarios by using the soliton area theorem to determine the nonlinear refractive index (n(2)) of Cr: ZnSe. Results gave an n(2) value of (1.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(-18) m(2)/W in agreement with previous reports.

We describe a cw Kerr-lens mode-locked Cr2+:ZnSe laser pumped by a 1800 nm thulium fiber laser. The astigmatically compensated asymmetric x cavity contained a 2.4-mm-long Cr2+:ZnSe sample with a pump absorption coefficient of 11.6 cm(-1) and was operated with a 1% output coupler. The dispersion compensation was achieved by using a MgF2 prism pair. During Kerr-lens mode-locked operation, we could generate 95 fs pulses at a pulse repetition rate of 94.3 MHz and with 40 mW of output power. The center wavelength of the pulses was 2420 nm. The pulses had a spectral width of 69 nm and a time-bandwidth product of 0.335, which is close to the transform limit for hyperbolic secant pulses. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America
