Abstract
This chapter explores the intricate interplay between bipolar disorder (BD) and cancer with a female sex-specific focus. Data on the interception between BD and cancer from epidemiological and genetic research is presented. The chapter navigates through the healthcare challenges involving diagnosis of cancer in women with BD, emphasizing the necessity of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach for the management of comorbid BD and cancer in women across all reproductive stages. Factors such as hormonal influences, medication strategies, and social perceptions (stigma) are explored and discussed in the context of future directions in this complex field. The chapter aims to enhance understanding of the diverse needs of female patients with comorbid BD and cancer and the need to develop tailored multidisciplinary interventions and support networks encompassing all relevant dimensions. © 2025 Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
