Bodily affections and desires in the phaledo: against a bipartite psychology reading

Abstract

Many interpreters of the Phaedo take it to present a bipartite psychology consisting of the soul and the body. On this view, the body in the Phaedo possesses the same level of sub-rational psychological capacity as the spirited and appetitive parts of the soul in later dialogues like the Republic: the body is capable of experiencing pleasure and pain, desiring, perceiving, even holding certain beliefs. The present thesis argues against reading the body as the literal subject of affective and desiderative states in the Phaedo, based on close textual analysis of the relevant passages. Instead, I argue for the view that the soul is the proper subject of 'bodily' affections and desires—states made possible on account of the soul's being embodied, but nevertheless states experienced by the soul, and not by the body. Though the thesis focuses on affective and desiderative states, I offer some brief reflections in favour of a soul-as-subject view in the case of perceptual and epistemic states as well.
