Infection prevention and control in Türkiye: a consensus report from the 7th National Healthcare-Associated Infections Symposium

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance continues to threaten modern healthcare systems, increasing the importance of effective infection prevention and control (IPC). This study presents a thematic analysis of discussions from the 7th National Healthcare-Associated Infections Symposium (Ulusal Sağlık Bakımıyla İlişkili İnfeksiyonlar Simpozyumu, USBİS). Audio-recorded sessions involving IPC leaders and healthcare professionals across Türkiye were transcribed and analyzed to identify persistent barriers and potential solutions. Key barriers included reporting pressures affecting data reliability, behavioral and cultural barriers, limitations in education and workforce capacity, gaps in standardization, and difficulties implementing infection control committee decisions. Participants emphasized strengthening institutional IPC culture, improving leadership visibility, simplifying data systems, and prioritizing sustainable behavioral change strategies.
