This thesis examines peacebuilding and reconciliation in with an emphasis on international law in post-war Guatemala. The study is a comprehensive analysis of the 36 year long internal conflict that took place, its peace accords, post-war reconstruction and lessons learned in peacebuilding. It aims to study a comprehensive look into peacebuilding after crisis using Guatemala as a case study. The thesis begins by looking into its historical background, information on peacebuilding, how Guatemala participated in its peacebuilding process, an interview with a human rights activist, a legal analysis and ending conclusion that includes an analysis based upon finding on research taken within the thesis. The thesis relies upon international law, national law, a social economic analysis and the role of development organizations within its post-war reconstruction. Lessons learned and general peacebuilding practices are also analysed in detail within this thesis. It proposes recommendations based upon international treaties, comparative analysis, and management of programs that the government and international development organizations have implemented. It uses academic, legal, and other sources that could be useful to peacebuilders, development organizations, or policy makers in a post-conflict reconstruction period after crisis.
