Publication Metadata only Postoperative ileus and nonpharmacological nursing interventions for colorectal surgery: a systematic review(W.B. Saunders, 2024) Bozkul, Gamze; Arslan, Hande Nur; Çelik, Sevilay Şenol; Graduate School of Health Sciences; School of NursingPurpose: This review evaluates nonpharmacological interventions for postoperative ileus (POI) prevention and treatment. Design: We systematically reviewed articles from various databases between January 2012 and February 2023 on POI prevention in colorectal surgery patients, emphasizing nursing interventions. Methods: Inclusion was based on criteria such as language (English or Turkish), date range, and study type. The risk of bias was evaluated using Cochrane's RoB2 tool. Findings: Of the 3,497 articles found, 987 unique articles were considered. After title and abstract reviews, 977 articles were excluded, leaving 52 randomized controlled trials for examination. Common interventions included chewing gum, early hydration, acupuncture, and coffee consumption. Compared to control groups, intervention groups had quicker bowel function return, shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and enhanced quality of life. Conclusion: Nondrug nursing interventions post colorectal surgery can effectively mitigate POI, optimize bowel function, and boost patient satisfaction, warranting their incorporation into post-surgery care protocols.Publication Metadata only Türkiye’de hemovijilans hemşireliğinde güncel durum(Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi, 2023) Sütçü Çiçek, Nurten; School of Nursing; Koç University HospitalThe aim of this study is to explain the development process of haemovigilance nursing in Turkey with examples. Haemovigilance is a process in which transfusion follow-up is carried out starting from the blood donation stage, adverse events and reactions experienced during the donation and transfusion process are monitored, and it is aimed to increase the safety of blood transfusion. Haemovigilance nursing; it covers the whole of the applications in the process of making the decision of blood and blood products transfusion and transfusion follow-up. The first studies on haemovigilance in Turkey started in 2004. In 2014, Transfusion Follow-up Nursing was determined in nine hospitals in Istanbul Çekmece Region. Within the scope of the “Technical Assistance Project for Strengthening the Blood Supply System in Turkey” carried out by the Ministry of Health between 2012 and 2014, studies were carried out to establish a national haemovigilance system. Because of these studies, the National Haemovigilance Guide published in 2016 is the most important development in the name of haemovigilance in our country. The duties, authorities and responsibilities of haemovigilance nurses have been determined together with the National Haemovigilance Guide. In order for haemovigilance nursing to develop and advance on the path of professionalism, there is a need for studies to be carried out and brought to the literature./Bu çalışmanın amacı, hemovijilans hemşireliğinin Türkiye’deki gelişim sürecini örnekleriyle açıklamaktır. Hemovijilans hemşireliğinin gelişimi ve profesyonellik yolunda ilerleyebilmesi için çalışmaların yapılarak literatüre kazandırılmasına ihtiyaç vardırPublication Metadata only The effect of using musical and lighted baby crib mobile on newborns' pain and stress during blood draw; randomized controlled trial(Galenos Publ House, 2024) Erguvan, Hayriye; School of Nursing; Graduate School of Health SciencesObjective: Newborns may experience pain and stress during blood draw procedures, and when these adverse reactions are not managed, they can lead to both physiological and psychological consequences. To evaluate the effect of using musical and lighted baby crib mobile on newborns' pain and stress during blood draw. Method: A parallel-group and randomized controlled methodology was employed in this research. The study involved 60 newborns and their caregivers. Data were collected through the "newborn information form'' and the "ALPS-neo pain and stress assessment scale''. Results: There is no statistically significant difference between the average pain and stress scores stated by parents and nurses for newborns (p>0.05) during the blood draw (intervention group=9.20 +/- 1.94; control group=9.33 +/- 2.17) and after the blood draw (intervention group=9.18 +/- 2.01; control group=9.10 +/-). The average pain and stress scores stated by the parents and the nurse for the newborns in the intervention and control groups were compatible with each other (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was revealed that the musical and lighted baby crib mobile was not effective in reducing newborn's pain and stress during blood draw. A scientifically grounded clinical investigation is advised to ascertain the impact of newborn crib mobiles on newborns' pain and stress levels.Publication Metadata only Family presence during CPR: a study of the experiences and opinions of Turkish critical care nurses(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2007) N/A; Badır, Aysel; Sepit, Diler; Faculty Member; Researcher; Semahat Arsel Nursing Education, Practice and Research Center / Semahat Arsel Hemşirelik Eğitim, Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi (SANERC); School of Nursing; N/A; N/A; N/ABackground: The concern over family witnessed cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been a frequent topic of debate in many countries. Objectives: The aim of this descriptive study is determine the experiences and opinions of Turkish critical care nurses about family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to bring this topic into the critical care and the public limelight in Turkey. Methods: Study population consisted of critical care nursing staff at four hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health, three hospitals affiliated with universities and three hospitals affiliated with Social Security Agency Hospitals. A total of 409 eligible critical care nurses were surveyed using a questionnaire which is consisted of 43 items under 3 areas of inquiry. Results: None of the hospitals that participated in this study had a protocol or policy regarding family witnessed resuscitation. More than half of the sample population had no experience of family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and none of the respondents had ever invited family members to the resuscitation room. A majority of the nurses did not agree that it was necessary for family members to be with their patient and did not want family members in resuscitation room. In addition, most of the nurses were concerned about the violation of patient confidentiality, had concerns that untrained family members would not understand CPR treatments, would consider them offensive and thereby argue with the resuscitation team. The nurses expressed their concern that witnessing resuscitation would cause long lasting adverse emotional effects on the family members. Conclusion: This study reveals that critical care nurses in Turkey are not familiar with the concept of family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In view of the increasing evidence from international studies about the value of family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation we recommend educational program about this issue and policy changes are required within the hospitals to enhance critical care in Turkey. Blunt trauma was the cause in 85.6%, 31.2% had head trauma, 38.1% exteremity injuries. of the patients enrolled in the study, only 17.1% (64 patients) had recieved analgesics. The most common analgesic medication group used was Nonsteroid Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID). According to these results, 82.9% of patients with pain due to trauma had not recieved analgesics and it can be concluded that pain in trauma patients is undertreated. Publication Metadata only Evaluation of the caregiving roles and attitudes of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic(Wiley, 2022) Yildirim, Dilek; Ozdemir, Ferda Akyuz; Can, Gulbeyaz; N/A; Genç, Zeliha; N/A; School of Nursing; N/ABackground: Nurses play a critical role in providing care to patients, in particular, they work in the frontlines in caring for patients with complicated COVID-19 requiring hospitalization. Evaluation of the caregiving roles and attitudes of nurses is critical in the current crisis. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the caregiving roles and attitudes of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study was performed with 130 nurses in Turkey. The attitude scale for the caregiving roles of nurses (ASCRNs) was used to collect data. We conducted an online survey between May and November 2020. Results: The mean total score of the participants on the ASCRN was 62.20 +/- 18.42. All nurses stated that they were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The ASCRN scores of nurses who received training about the COVID-19 pandemic and who thought that the personal protective equipment they used was sufficient had statistically higher scores on the ASCRN (p < .05). Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on the caregiving roles and attitudes of the nurses.Publication Metadata only Globalization, internationalization and nursing(Wiley-Blackwell, 2004) N/A; Herdman, Elizabeth Anne; Other; School of Nursing; N/AN/APublication Metadata only Endotracheal tube cuff pressure management an observational study guided by the SEIPS model(Lippincott Williams and Wilkins (LWW), 2022) Özkaynak, Mustafa; N/A; Kebapçı, Ayda; Faculty Member; School of Nursing; 203808Introduction: The aim of the rigorous endotracheal tube cuff pressure (ETTCP) management is to maintain cuff pressures within the recommended values during the mechanical ventilation period. However, hyperinflation or hypoinflation of cuff has been reported because of inconsistent clinical practices in intensive care unit (ICU) settings. Furthermore, there is no available best evidence for clinical decision-making regarding the ETTCP management provided by international institutes.Publication Metadata only The relation between quality of life and future expectations for refugee adolescents(Wiley, 2021) Ekim, Ayfer; N/A; Özçevik Subaşı, Damla; Ocakçı, Ayşe Ferda; Beşer, Ayşe; Sümengen, Aylin Akça; PhD Student; Faculty Member; Faculty Member; PhD Student; Graduate School of Health Sciences; School of Nursing; School of Nursing; Graduate School of Health Sciences; N/A; 1729; 143490; 257066Problem: Refugee children and their families encounter various challenges in a new country. It is argued that a side-effect of globalization is cultural homogeneity and loss of life world, or 'McDonaldization'. McDonaldization represents the rationalization of society in the quest for extreme efficiency. More recently, Mestrović has argued that the rationalization of emotions has also occurred and that Western societies are entering a postemotional phase. In postemotional societies there has been a separation of emotion from action. The result is synthetic, manufactured emotions manipulated and standardized for mass consumption. In this paper I explore what it means to nurse in a 'postemotional society' and what impact this dulling of the emotions has had on a profession that locates 'care' as its central defining concept. My aim is to generate critical discussion of the shape and direction of contemporary society and the role of nursing within it.
