One of the hallmarks of glioma is its invasiveness. Furthermore, glioma cells tend to readily detach from the primary tumor and travel through the brain tissue, making complete tumor resection impossible in many cases. To expand the knowledge regarding the invasive behavior of glioma, evaluate drug resistance, and recapitulate the tumor microenvironment, various modeling strategies were proposed in the last decade, including three-dimensional (3D) biomimetic scaffold-free cultures, organ-on-chip microfluidics chips, and 3D bioprinting platforms, which allow for the investigation on patient-specific treatments. The emerging method of 3D bioprinting technology has introduced a time- and cost-efficient approach to create in vitro models that possess the structural and functional characteristics of human organs and tissues by spatially positioning cells and bioink. Here, we review emerging 3D bioprinted models developed for recapitulating the brain environment and glioma tumors, with the purpose of probing glioma cell invasion and gliomagenesis and discuss the potential use of 4D printing and machine learning applications in glioma modelling.Publication Metadata only 48.4: Beam forming for a laser based auto-stereoscopic multi-viewer display(Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2011) Baghsiahi, Hadi; Selviah, David R.; Willman, Eero; Fernández, Anibal; Day, Sally E.; Surman, Phil A.; N/A; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; N/A; N/A; N/A; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Akşit, Kaan; Ölçer, Selim; Mostafazadeh, Aref; Erden, Erdem; Chellappan, Kishore Velichappattu; Ürey, Hakan; PhD Student; Other; N/A; Other; N/A; Faculty Member; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/A; N/A; N/A; College of Engineering; N/A; N/A; N/A; N/A; N/A; 8579An auto-stereoscopic back projection display using a RGB multiemitter laser illumination source and micro-optics to provide a wider view is described. Herein, we report a novel composite, prepared by coating an ordinary activated carbon (AC) with an ionic liquid (IL) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, [BMIM][OAc]) offering an almost complete CO2 selectivity over N-2 and CH4. Data indicated that pore blockage by the IL accompanied with the enhancement in polarity and reduction in the hydrophobic character of the surface hindered the sorption of N-2 and CH4. For CO2, on the other hand, new chemisorption and physisorption sites became available associated with the IL layer on the surface, making the composite material significantly selective. Newly formed chemisorption sites attributed to the cation's acidic C2H sites, which become available with bi-layer formation. Presence of multiple competitive sorption sites with different energies was further proven with thermal analysis and detailed spectroscopic analysis. Data showed that CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 ideal selectivities boosted from 3.3 to 688.3 (2.3 to 54.7) and from 15.6 to 903.7 (7.1 to 74.3) at 0.1 (1) bar and 25 degrees C, respectively, upon the deposition of IL layer. Especially at lower pressures, the IL/AC material became almost fully selective for CO2 offering ideal selectivities in the order of several tens of thousands. To the best of our knowledge, the remarkable enhancement in the ideal CO2 selectivity by a straightforward post-synthesis modification of an ordinary AC, as reported here, sets a new benchmark in high-performance and efficient gas separation for similar porous materials.Publication Metadata only A bi-criteria optimization model to analyze the impacts of electric vehicles on costs and emissions(Elsevier, 2017) N/A; N/A; Department of Industrial Engineering; Kabatepe, Bora; Türkay, Metin; Master Student; Faculty Member; Department of Industrial Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/A; 24956Electric vehicles (EV) are emerging as a mobility solution to reduce emissions in the transportation sector. The studies environmental impact analysis of EVs in the literature are based on the average energy mix or pre-defined generation scenarios and construct policy recommendations with a cost minimization objective. However, the environmental performance of EVs depends on the source of the marginal electricity provided to the grid and single objective models do not provide a thorough analysis on the economic and environmental impacts of EVs. In this paper, these gaps are addressed by a four step methodology that analyzes the effects of EVs under different charging and market penetration scenarios. The methodology includes a bi-criteria optimization model representing the electricity market operations. The results from a real-life case analysis show that EVs decrease costs and emissions significantly compared to conventional vehicles.Publication Metadata only A bounded component analysis approach for the separation of convolutive mixtures of dependent and independent sources(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2013) N/A; N/A; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; İnan, Hüseyin Atahan; Erdoğan, Alper Tunga; Master Student; Faculty Member; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/A; 41624Bounded Component Analysis is a new framework for Blind Source Separation problem. It allows separation of both dependent and independent sources under the assumption about the magnitude boundedness of sources. This article proposes a novel Bounded Component Analysis optimization setting for the separation of the convolutive mixtures of sources as an extension of a recent geometric framework introduced for the instantaneous mixing problem. It is shown that the global maximizers of this setting are perfect separators. The article also provides the iterative algorithm corresponding to this setting and the numerical examples to illustrate its performance especially for separating convolutive mixtures of sources that are correlated in both space and time dimensions.Publication Metadata only A built-in vibration sensor using ARC-discharged reactive ion plated PZT(The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 2011) Tani, Masanao; Akamatsu, Masahiro; Yasuda, Yoshiaki; Fujita, Hiroyuk; Toshiyoshi, Hiroshi; N/A; Baran, Utku; Master Student; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; N/AA piezoelectrically excited micro cantilever with multiple electrode ports has been developed as a standard test device to investigate the piezoelectric oscillation sensing capability. A 5 μm thick PZT was deposited by the arc-discharge reactive ion plating on a 20-μm-thick and 2700-μm-long SOI cantilever, and its piezoelectrically measured vibration signal was correlated with the reference oscillation signal from the laser Doppler vibrometer to prove the feasibility as oscillation detector. An equivalent circuit expression for the sensing electrode has been found.Publication Metadata only A CAM-based path generation method for rapid prototyping applications(Springer London Ltd, 2011) N/A; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Lazoğlu, İsmail; N/A; Faculty Member; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Manufacturing and Automation Research Center (MARC); N/A; College of Engineering; N/A; 179391A wide range of rapid prototyping (RP) methods are available commercially. Even though the hardware and production materials of these RP methods differ, their production techniques are built on the same idea: layer-by-layer material additive manufacturing. Whatever the material is used, it is deposited, vulcanized, or melted by following a pre-determined path, and each layer is stowed on the previous one to create the 3D model which is designed by using a computer-aided design program. The path which is followed while creating the model is very crucial. In this paper, a novel idea for path generation for RP processes is introduced. This new method is based on computer numerical controlled milling operation. Although the RP process and the milling process are completely opposite of each other since one of them is an additive and the other one is a subtractive method, the paths which are followed for these operations are very similar and based on the same idea: The progress goes on layer by layer. In this novel method, cutter location source files are used to create paths for RP processes. Examples of the prototypes produced by using this new method are also presented in the paper.Publication Metadata only A combined interval and floating-point reciprocal unit(IEEE, 2005) N/A; N/A; Department of Computer Engineering; Küçükkabak, Umut; Akkaş, Ahmet; Master Student; Faculty Member; Department of Computer Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/AInterval arithmetic is one technique for accurate and reliable computing. Among interval arithmetic operations, division is the most time consuming operation. This paper presents the design and implementation of a combined interval and floating-point reciprocal unit. To compute the reciprocal of an operand, an initial approximation is computed first and then iterated twice by Newton-Raphson iteration. The combined interval and floating-point reciprocal unit computes the reciprocal of a double precision floating-point number in eleven clock cycles and the reciprocal of an interval in twenty-one clock cycles. The unit is implemented in VHDL and synthesized to estimate the area and the worst case delay. Simulation results showed that the least significant bit of the floating-point result cannot be guaranteed to be same for all cases compared to the result based on an infinite precision. For interval reciprocal, however, the true result is contained in the result interval.Publication Metadata only A communication theoretical analysis of synaptic multiple-access channel in hippocampal-cortical neurons(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2013) N/A; N/A; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Malak, Derya; Akan, Özgür Barış; PhD Student; Faculty Member; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/A; 6647Communication between neurons occurs via transmission of neural spike trains through junctional structures, either electrical or chemical synapses, providing connections among nerve terminals. Since neural communication is achieved at synapses, the process of neurotransmission is called synaptic communication. Learning and memory processes are based on the changes in strength and connectivity of neural networks which usually contain multiple synaptic connections. In this paper, we investigate multiple-access neuro-spike communication channel, in which the neural signal, i.e., the action potential, is transmitted through multiple synaptic paths directed to a common postsynaptic neuron terminal. Synaptic transmission is initiated with random vesicle release process from presynaptic neurons to synaptic paths. Each synaptic channel is characterized by its impulse response and the number of available postsynaptic receptors. Here, we model the multiple-access synaptic communication channel, and investigate the information rate per spike at the postsynaptic neuron, and how postsynaptic rate is enhanced compared to single terminal synaptic communication channel. Furthermore, we analyze the synaptic transmission performance by incorporating the role of correlation among presynaptic terminals, and point out the postsynaptic rate improvement.
