Aim: the purpose of this study was to identify the experiences and views of nurses on personal protective equipment use and nursing workforce planning in Turkey. Methods: this descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between 23 December 2020 and 3 May 2021, among 362 nurses who agreed to participate in this study voluntarily. Results: the findings showed that the satisfaction scores were significantly higher for those nurses who worked in 8-h shifts, were not assigned to different clinics, were notified by an official letter and 1 week or month in advance before assignment compared with nurses in other categories. Conclusions: the problems that have arisen in the COVID-19 pandemic process have made it clear that there is a need for a nursing services management model in the event of an epidemic. Implications for nursing management: this study reveals the need for the ‘Nursing Services Management Model in the Event of an Epidemic’ by discussing the problems of nurse workforce planning and protective personal equipment management from the perspective of nurses who experienced these problems at first hand.Publication Open Access Gender stereotypes in the classroom and effects on achievement(Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Press, 2018) Alan, Şule; Mumcu, İpek; Department of Economics; Ertaç, Seda; Faculty Member; Department of Economics; College of Administrative Sciences and Economics; 107102We study the effect of elementary school teachers' beliefs about gender roles on student achievement. We exploit a natural experiment where teachers are prevented from self-selecting into schools, and, conditional on school, students are allocated to teachers randomly. We show that girls who are taught for longer than a year by teachers with traditional gender views have lower performance in objective math and verbal tests, and this effect is amplified with longer exposure to the same teacher. We find no effect on boys. We show that the effect is partly mediated by teachers' transmitting traditional beliefs to girls.Publication Metadata only How removing prescription drugs from reimbursement lists increases the pharmaceutical expenditures for alternatives(Springer, 2011) Department of Business Administration; N/A; Ali, Özden Gür; Topaler, Başak; Faculty Member; Master Student; Department of Business Administration; College of Administrative Sciences and Economics; Graduate School of Business; 57780; N/AChanging the status of drugs from prescription-only to over-the-counter and removing them from reimbursement list has been used as a cost reduction measure by several third-party payers. in June 2006, the Turkish government, in an effort to curtail costs, removed many prescription drugs from the reimbursement list. This paper examines the effect of this policy on the expenditures for drugs that were removed from the reimbursement list and for their reimbursable alternatives that can be prescribed by physicians on patient request. To accomplish these goals, Actual expenditures in four anatomical therapeutic chemical (ATC) groups were compared with expected expenditures in the absence of policy change for both removed and alternative drugs. the findings indicated that the expenditures on alternative drugs beyond expectations. in two of the four ATC groups involved in the study, the increase was large enough to wipe out the reduction in expenditures on the drugs removed from the reimbursement list.Publication Metadata only Profiling in bargaining over college tuition(Oxford University Press (OUP), 2006) Epple, D.; Romano, R.; Sieg H.; Department of Economics; Sarpça, Sinan; Faculty Member; Department of Economics; College of Administrative Sciences and Economics; 52406Profiling in college admissions arises when applicant attributes are given weight because they are correlated with unobservable student characteristics that the college values. The article models the admission process of a single college as a bargaining game between the college and a potential student with sequential moves and asymmetric information. We test the empirical implications of this model using a unique data set from a private college in the US. We find that the empirical evidence is consistent with the notion that signalling and profiling are important aspects of the college admission process.Publication Metadata only Stratified partial likelihood estimation(Elsevier, 1999) Ridder, Gert; Department of Economics; Tunalı, Fehmi İnsan; Faculty Member; Department of Economics; College of Administrative Sciences and Economics; 105635When multiple durations are generated by a single unit, they may be related in a way that is not fully captured by the regressors. The omitted unit-specific variables might vary over the durations, They might also be correlated with the variables in the regression component. We propose an estimator that responds to these concerns and develop a specification test for detecting unobserved unit-specific effects, Data from Malaysia reveal that concentration of child mortality in some families is imperfectly explained by observed explanatory variables, and that failure to control for unobserved heterogeneity seriously biases the parameter estimates.
