A bi-criteria optimization model to analyze the impacts of electric vehicles on costs and emissions
(Elsevier, 2017) N/A; N/A; Department of Industrial Engineering; Kabatepe, Bora; Türkay, Metin; Master Student; Faculty Member; Department of Industrial Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/A; 24956
Electric vehicles (EV) are emerging as a mobility solution to reduce emissions in the transportation sector. The studies environmental impact analysis of EVs in the literature are based on the average energy mix or pre-defined generation scenarios and construct policy recommendations with a cost minimization objective. However, the environmental performance of EVs depends on the source of the marginal electricity provided to the grid and single objective models do not provide a thorough analysis on the economic and environmental impacts of EVs. In this paper, these gaps are addressed by a four step methodology that analyzes the effects of EVs under different charging and market penetration scenarios. The methodology includes a bi-criteria optimization model representing the electricity market operations. The results from a real-life case analysis show that EVs decrease costs and emissions significantly compared to conventional vehicles.

A CAM-based path generation method for rapid prototyping applications
(Springer London Ltd, 2011) N/A; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Lazoğlu, İsmail; N/A; Faculty Member; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Manufacturing and Automation Research Center (MARC); N/A; College of Engineering; N/A; 179391
A wide range of rapid prototyping (RP) methods are available commercially. Even though the hardware and production materials of these RP methods differ, their production techniques are built on the same idea: layer-by-layer material additive manufacturing. Whatever the material is used, it is deposited, vulcanized, or melted by following a pre-determined path, and each layer is stowed on the previous one to create the 3D model which is designed by using a computer-aided design program. The path which is followed while creating the model is very crucial. In this paper, a novel idea for path generation for RP processes is introduced. This new method is based on computer numerical controlled milling operation. Although the RP process and the milling process are completely opposite of each other since one of them is an additive and the other one is a subtractive method, the paths which are followed for these operations are very similar and based on the same idea: The progress goes on layer by layer. In this novel method, cutter location source files are used to create paths for RP processes. Examples of the prototypes produced by using this new method are also presented in the paper.

A diversity combination model incorporating an inward bias for interaural time-level difference cue integration in sound lateralization
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2020) N/A; Department of Computer Engineering; Mojtahedi, Sina; Erzin, Engin; Ungan, Pekcan; Faculty Member; Faculty Member; Department of Computer Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; School of Medicine; N/A; 34503; N/A
A sound source with non-zero azimuth leads to interaural time level differences (ITD and ILD). Studies on hearing system imply that these cues are encoded in different parts of the brain, but combined to produce a single lateralization percept as evidenced by experiments indicating trading between them. According to the duplex theory of sound lateralization, ITD and ILD play a more significant role in low-frequency and high-frequency stimulations, respectively. In this study, ITD and ILD, which were extracted from a generic head-related transfer functions, were imposed on a complex sound consisting of two low- and seven high-frequency tones. Two-alternative forced-choice behavioral tests were employed to assess the accuracy in identifying a change in lateralization. Based on a diversity combination model and using the error rate data obtained from the tests, the weights of the ITD and ILD cues in their integration were determined by incorporating a bias observed for inward shifts. The weights of the two cues were found to change with the azimuth of the sound source. While the ILD appears to be the optimal cue for the azimuths near the midline, the ITD and ILD weights turn to be balanced for the azimuths far from the midline.

A faster simulation method for the stochastic response of hysteretic structures subject to earthquakes
(Elsevier, 1996) Çakmak, Ahmet Ş.; Nielsen, Søren R.K.; Department of Mathematics; Köylüoğlu, Hasan Uğur; Teaching Faculty; Department of Mathematics; College of Sciences; N/A
A semi-analytical forward-difference Monte Carlo simulation procedure is proposed for the determination of the lower order statistical moments and the joint probability density function of the stochastic response of hysteretic non-linear multi-degree-of-freedom structural systems subject to nonstationary gaussian white noise excitation, as an alternative to conventional direct simulation methods. The method generalizes the so-called Ermak-Allen algorithm developed for simulation applications in molecular dynamics to structural hysteretic systems. The proposed simulation procedure rely on an assumption of local gaussianity during each time step. This assumption is tantamount to various linearizations of the equations of motion. The procedure then applies an analytical convolution of the excitation process, hereby reducing the generation of stochastic processes and numerical integration to the generation of random vectors only. Such a treatment offers higher rates of convergence, faster speed and higher accuracy. The procedure has been compared to the direct Monte Carlo simulation procedure, which uses a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme with the white noise process approximated by a broad band Ruiz-Penzien broken line process. The considered system was a multi-dimenensional hysteretic shear frame, where the constitutive equation of the hysteretic shear forces are described by a bilinear hysteretic model. The comparisons show that significant savings in computer time and accuracy can be achieved.

How neurons influence each other's firing depends on the strength of synaptic connections among them. Motivated by the highly interconnected structure of the brain, in this study, we propose a computational model to estimate the relationships among voxels and employ them as features for cognitive state classification. We represent the sequence of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) measurements recorded during a cognitive stimulus by a set of local meshes. Then, we represent the corresponding cognitive state by the edge weights of these meshes each of which is estimated assuming a regularized linear relationship among voxel time series in a predefined locality. The estimated mesh edge weights provide a better representation of information in the brain for cognitive state or task classification. We examine the representative power of ourmesh edge weights on visual recognition and emotional memory retrieval experiments by training a support vector machine classifier. Also, we use mesh edge weights as feature vectors of inter-subject classification onHuman Connectome Project task fMRI dataset, and test their performance. We observe that mesh edge weights perform better than the popular fMRI features, such as, raw voxel intensity values, pairwise correlations, features extracted using PCA and ICA, for classifying the cognitive states.

Many electrochemical devices are based on the fundamental process of ion migration and accumulation on surfaces. Complex interplay of molecular properties of ions and device dimensions control the entire process and define the overall dynamics of the system. Particularly, for ionic liquid-based electrolytes it is often not clear which property, and to what extent, contributes to the overall performance of the device. Herein we use X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) while the device is under electrical bias. Such a procedure reveals localized electrical potential developments, through binding energy shifts of the atomic core levels, in a chemically specific fashion. Combining it with square-wave AC modulation, the information can also be extended to time domain, and we investigate devices configured as a coplanar capacitor, with an ionic liquid as the electrolyte, in macro-dimensions. Our analysis reveals that a nonlinear voltage profile across the device emerges from spatially non-uniform electrical double layer formation on electrode surfaces. Interestingly the coplanar capacitor has an extremely slow time response which is particularly controlled by IL film thickness. XPS measurements can capture the ion dynamics in the tens of seconds to microseconds range, and reveal that ionic motion is all over the device, including on metallic electrode regions. This behavior can only be attributed to motion in more than one dimension. The ion dynamics can also be faithfully simulated by using a modified PNP equation, taking into account steric effects, and device dimensions. XPS measurements on two devices with different dimensions corroborated and validated the simulation results. The present results propose a new experimental approach and provide new insights into the dynamics of ions across electrochemical devices.

This paper presents a new crystal plasticity formulation to predict the role of hydrogen embrittlement on the mechanical behavior of metallic materials. Specifically, a series of experiments were carried out to monitor the role of hydrogen interstitial content on the uniaxial tensile deformation response of iron alloyed with hydrogen, and the classical Voce hardening scheme was modified to account for the shear stresses imposed on arrested dislocations due to the surrounding hydrogen interstitials. The proposed set of physically grounded crystal plasticity formulations successfully predicted the deformation response of iron in the presence of different degrees of hydrogen embrittlement. Moreover, the combined experimental and modeling effort presented herein opens a new venue for predicting the alterations in the performance of metallic materials, where the hydrogen embrittlement is unavoidable.

A novel analytical algorithm for prediction of workpiece temperature in end milling
(Elsevier, 2022) N/A; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Akhtar, Waseem; Lazoğlu, İsmail; PhD Student; Faculty Member; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering; N/A; 179391
Temperature is a critical parameter in machining as it directly affects the cutting performance, part quality, residual stresses, distortion, tool life, etc. In this article, a novel analytical algorithm for fast temperature predic-tion in intermittent cutting processes like milling is proposed. For the first time, the temperature drop during the noncutting period is taken into consideration for the workpiece side. The model also takes into account time-varying chip thickness due to the trochoidal motion of the milling tool. Validation tests with Ti6Al4V showed the promise of the algorithm in predicting the milling temperature under various cutting conditions.(c) 2022 CIRP. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel approach to tube design via von Mises probability distribution
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024) Subay, Şehmuz Ali; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Oral, Atacan; Subaşı, Ömer; Öztürk, Çağlar; Lazoğlu, İsmail; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Manufacturing and Automation Research Center (MARC); Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering; College of Engineering
Discharge tube is a critical component in a reciprocating compressor that carries the refrigerant. It also transmits vibrations from compressor body to housing, making the design of tube a complex engineering problem combining static, modal and flow behaviour. This study proposes a novel design algorithm for discharge tube, to decrease the dependency on the trial-and-error approach commonly used by manufacturers. The computational approach creates a tube that connects the inlet and outlet using von Mises probability distribution. The created geometries are checked for static and dynamic properties using FEA. The algorithm continues until a candidate design passes the imposed thresholds. The candidate designs perform similarly to benchmark in evaluated aspects, demonstrating promising results. The presented algorithm is successful in generating alternative tube designs from scratch and can accommodate varying requirements. The main novelty of this study is the development of a comprehensive decision algorithm that considers multiple engineering parameters simultaneously. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

A planar metamaterial with dual-band double-negative response at EHF
(2010) Gündoğdu, T. Funda; Gökkavaş, Mutlu; Soukoulis, Costas M.; Özbay, Ekmel; Department of Physics; Güven, Kaan; Faculty Member; Department of Physics; College of Sciences; 52290
We report the fabrication and electromagnetic characterization of a planar composite metamaterial (CMM) that is designed to achieve dual-frequency double-negative response at the lower end of the extremely high-frequency (EHF) band. The CMM is based on cut wire pairs and continuous wire elements. Dual-frequency operation is obtained by employing cut wire pairs of two different lengths within the unit cell of the CMM. The magnetic response of the cut wire pairs and the left-handed transmission band of the CMM are demonstrated by experiment and numerical simulations. It is found that the combined electric response of the dual-band CMM is complicated and imposes certain restrictions to the structure design in achieving true left-handed response at both designated frequencies.
