dc.description.abstractAbstract Backgroundandaims:Obesitywithoutmetabolicalterations(MetabolicallyHealthy Obesity,MHO) isaconditionwithariskofdeathandcardiovasculardiseaselowerthanthat ofobesityassociatedwithmetabolicalterations(MetabolicallyUnhealthyObesity,MUO)and similartothatofhealthynonobeseindividuals. Inflammationisconsideredasakeyriskfactor mediatingtheadversehealthoutcomesinobesity. Methodsandresults:Wecomparedcirculatinglevelsofthirteenmajorcytokinesandadipokines andtheexpressionprofilesoffifteenpro-inflammatoryandtwoanti-inflammatorygenes in visceralandsubcutaneousadiposetissueinaseriesof16MHOpatientsandin32MUOpatients thatunderwentbariatricsurgery.MHOwasdefinedaccordingtothemostapplieddefinitionin current literature. SerumlevelsofalargesetofmajorcytokinesandadipokinesdidnotdifferbetweenMHOand MUOpatients(p 0.15).Analysesof theexpressionprofileofpro-inflammatoryandantiinflammatorygenesinsubcutaneousandvisceraladiposetissuefailedtoshowdifferencesbetweenMHOandMUOpatients(p 0.07).SensitivityanalysesapplyingtwoadditionaldefinitionsofMHOconfirmedtheresultsof theprimaryanalysis. Conclusion: Inaseriesofmetabolicallyhealthyobesepatientsneithercirculatinglevelsofmajor cytokinesandadipokinesnorthegeneexpressionprofileofalargesetofpro-inflammatoryand anti-inflammatorygenesinsubcutaneousandvisceral fatdifferedfromthoseinmetabolically unhealthyobesepatients.
